Demi Kahn

(b. 1989, Houston, Texas) is an award-winning sculptural fiber artist with a background in Geology. In her art she puts softness in dialogue with strength. Using traditional macrame and weaving techniques she combines a variety of organic and non-organic materials into sweeping three-dimensional forms that explore the tension between desired strength and inherent softness. Kahn has received an MS in Geology from the University of Alaska Fairbanks and has participated in courses at the Glassell Studio School of the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, though most of her artistic practice is self-taught. The artist has participated in exhibitions at Gallery Diderot, Orquevaux, France; the Lawndale Art Center’s Big Show, Houston, TX; and Lanecia Rouse Tinsley Gallery, Houston, TX. In 2020 Kahn was awarded the Art Category Etsy Design Award, and in 2022 received both the Denis Diderot Grant and Emerging Artist grant from the Chateaux Orquevaux Residency Program. Kahn currently lives and works in Houston, TX.

  • My artistic practice centers around cotton, wire, dye, and acrylic, with a focus on transforming these materials into sculptural forms and installations through innovative applications of traditional macrame and textile techniques. Cotton, a material with roots tracing back to Egypt's Nile Valley around 3000 BC, holds profound significance in my work, offering versatility for intricate knotting processes and the application of tension and force. This connection to cotton and macrame techniques aligns my art with the enduring tradition of functional craft, emphasizing a legacy spanning centuries.

I meticulously apply a variety of color gradients to the string, using hand-dyeing and painting processes. The resulting art takes on an organic, three-dimensional shape, both on and off the wall, as sweeping natural forms merge with skeletal, flowing, and otherworldly figures. The distinct aesthetic features bold, gradational color palettes that animate soft fibers and textures, inviting viewers into an immersive, fantastical experience with contemporary soft sculptures that are nearly alien-like.

Inspired by themes of escapism, introspection, and femininity through time, my sculptures explore the tension between desired strength and inherent softness. Evoking personal experiences from childhood to young adulthood, where I sought refuge from conflict by shrinking into small, obedient spaces, my art signifies a journey toward expansion. I break self-limitations through space-taking artworks, ranging from small sculptures to life-size installations designed for interaction. This redefinition of softness amplifies materials through color and shape, adding strength and voice to my creations.

Within the roles of friend, wife, and mother, my art constructs an environment of escape, providing a space to observe and redefine femininity by celebrating the soft touch of womanhood alongside its inherent ferocity.
